Manu Bhaker, one of India's most celebrated shooters, is expected to be included in the final list for the prestigious Khel Ratna award after her initial exclusion caused widespread criticism, reported Hindustan Times.
Manu Bhaker, who made history at the Paris Olympics with two bronze medals in the 10m air pistol individual and mixed team events, was notably absent from the preliminary recommendations. This omission led to significant backlash from the sports community and fans alike.

The provisional list included hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and para-athlete Praveen Kumar, who clinched a gold medal in high jump at the Paris Paralympics. However, Bhaker's absence left many questioning the selection process. While the awards selection committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice V. Ramasubramanian, typically reviews applications filed by athletes, it also holds the authority to consider names outside this pool.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) promptly intervened, writing to Sports Secretary Sujata Chaturvedi, requesting Bhaker's inclusion on "exceptional grounds". NRAI president Kalikesh Singh Deo emphasised the need for reconsideration, stating, "If she applied, there's no reason for her exclusion. If not, the committee's hands were tied. We hope the ministry acknowledges her achievements and ensures she receives the recognition she deserves," Deo told HT.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is expected to take a final decision on the matter in the coming days. A ministry official clarified that the list is not yet final and that due process is being followed.
Addressing the controversy, Manu Bhaker broke her silence on Tuesday, expressing humility and gratitude. "Awards motivate me but are not my ultimate goal. Perhaps there was a lapse on my part during the nomination process, which is now being addressed. I remain focused on winning more medals for my country," she said.
Bhaker's remarkable achievements, including her performance in Paris, have cemented her as a top contender for the Khel Ratna following the change in stance.
