What was meant to be a joyous night for the nation, turned to tragedy in Mexico City as three people lost their lives during the celebrations of Mexico's historic World Cup 2026 knockout match win against Ecuador.

On Tuesday night (June 30), massive crowds gathered in downtown Mexico City to celebrate the national team's commanding 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32 at Estadio Azteca. The win propelled Mexico into the last 16 for the first time since their 1986 home tournament, ending a long knockout-stage drought.

Mexico Celebrations turn Deadly

However, the festivities turned deadly near the iconic Angel of Independence monument along Paseo de la Reforma. Three people - a 44-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman, and a 48-year-old woman - were found unconscious in different spots in the surrounding streets and Juárez neighborhood. Emergency responders performed CPR, but all three succumbed to asphyxiation (suffocation), likely amid the intense crowding.

Mexico City's public health authority confirmed the deaths in the early hours of Wednesday and noted that the victims had been identified by their families. City officials estimated that hundreds of thousands - possibly over a million - fans flooded the area, chanting, dancing, and spraying foam in the classic passionate style of Mexican football celebrations.

Mayor Clara Brugada expressed deep sorrow and offered full support to the bereaved families. In a statement on X, she wrote: "With my heart in my hand, I am sending a hug and my most sincere condolences to their loved ones. We reiterate the call to always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy."

Mexico dominated the match, which was delayed by about an hour due to a thunderstorm. Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured the result in front of a fervent home crowd at the legendary Azteca. This victory marks a significant milestone for the co-hosts in the 2026 tournament.
