Sports News Bulletin: Mandhana's Captaincy Era, India's Asian Games Review and a FIFA Storm

Smriti Mandhana begins a new chapter in Indian women's cricket as she prepares to lead the national team against Zimbabwe, while scrutiny of India's Asian Games campaign has intensified following a review by the Sports Ministry. Elsewhere, India's T20I series against West Indies has reached a decisive stage, and veteran batter Punam Raut has announced her retirement from international cricket.

Sports News

In football, Vinicius Junior has criticised refereeing standards after receiving a four-match suspension, while FIFA president Gianni Infantino faces renewed criticism over transparency and governance. Indian badminton also delivered a positive result at the Denmark Open, with Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand reaching the women's doubles quarter-finals.

1. Smriti Mandhana Begins India Captaincy Era Against Zimbabwe in Raipur

Smriti Mandhana will begin her new chapter as India's captain when the team opens its T20I series against Zimbabwe in Raipur, which will also host its first international women's match. The series marks Zimbabwe's first-ever bilateral tour against India, with the visitors arriving after losing all 18 of their T20Is in 2026. India, meanwhile, enter the contest after winning the Asia Cup and Asian Games gold, having also secured eight consecutive T20I victories since their defeat to Australia in June.

Shafali Verma, India's new vice-captain, will be another key player after registering scores of 64, 68, 40 not out, 100 not out and 48 in her last five T20Is. India are still weighing their options at No. 3 in the absence of the injured Jemimah Rodrigues, with Anushka Sharma and Niki Prasad among the candidates. Zimbabwe will look to opener Kelis Ndhlovu, their leading T20I run-scorer this year with 320 runs, to provide a strong start.

2. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Smiles as PM Modi Praises India's Teenage Asian Games Medallists

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi drew attention during the felicitation ceremony for India's Asian Games contingent in Delhi after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the country's young medal-winners. Modi highlighted athletes aged 15 to 17 who had performed at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, saying that age should not limit sporting success and that early development can provide a competitive advantage.

The camera focused on Sooryavanshi, a member of India's gold-winning men's cricket team, as the Prime Minister made his remarks, with the teenager responding with a broad smile. Modi also outlined the government's focus on identifying and training sporting talent among children aged five to 15 through initiatives such as Khelo India and Emerging Khelo India. He separately praised India's women athletes, who won 38 of the country's 85 medals, including 11 golds.

3. Sports Ministry Questions India's Asian Games Performance, Demands Results From Federations

India's performance at the 2026 Asian Games came under scrutiny during a Sports Ministry review, with officials examining disappointing returns in athletics and badminton and concerns surrounding injured athletes. India finished with 85 medals, including 21 golds, compared with 106 medals at the previous edition in Hangzhou. A senior official said Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya made it clear that national sports federations could no longer cite a lack of financial support as an excuse and must demonstrate results on the ground.

Athletics recorded only one gold medal, down from six at the previous Games, while badminton returned just one men's team bronze; defending men's doubles champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were eliminated in the first round. Questions were also raised about the fitness of athletes including Jyothi Yarraji, Praveen Chithravel and Avinash Sable, while shooting star Manu Bhaker finished without a medal.

Mandaviya called for stronger talent identification, more sports science and psychological support, and sustained preparation, while Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao urged federations to target a top-three finish at the 2030 Asian Games in Doha.

4. Vinicius Junior Claims Referees Are Targeting Him After Four-Match Suspension

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has accused referees of treating him unfairly and called for greater protection for attacking players, including Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez. His comments followed a four-match Spanish league suspension for pulling an opponent's hair and protesting against the referee after being sent off.

Vinicius questioned the severity of the punishment, arguing that he had not used offensive language to justify such a lengthy ban. He also cited his own figures, claiming he had been fouled around 500 times but that those incidents had resulted in only five red cards for opponents. The Brazilian acknowledged that he was experiencing a dip in form, having scored only twice for club and country this season, but insisted he would recover.

He was substituted during Real Madrid's 4-3 comeback win over Roma in the Champions League, with Endrick scoring an 85th-minute equaliser before Antonio Rudiger secured victory in the 90th minute. Vinicius will miss upcoming league fixtures against Sevilla, Barcelona, Racing Santander and Valencia.

5. Denmark Open: Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Reach Quarter-finals

India's Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the women's doubles quarter-finals at the Denmark Open 2026 after defeating Indonesia's fifth-seeded pair, Rachel Allessya Rose and Febi Setianingrum, in straight games. The Indians won 21-16, 21-17 in the round of 16, overcoming a close start before taking control through improved defence and fewer unforced errors.

Treesa's attacking play from the backcourt and Gayatri's work at the net helped the pair maintain their advantage against the Indonesian duo. They had reached the round of 16 with a 22-20, 21-14 victory over Chinese Taipei's Chen Yan Fei and Hsieh Pei Shan. Their next opponents will be determined by the match between Malaysia's Asian Games bronze medallists Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan, and Hong Kong's Nga Ting Yeung and Pui Lam Yeung.

6. Kuldeep Yadav's Omission Questioned After India Lose Fourth T20I to West Indies

Former India fast bowler Varun Aaron has questioned the decision to leave specialist wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav out of the playing XI after India suffered a 24-run defeat to West Indies in the fourth T20I in Hyderabad. West Indies posted 247 for three before restricting India to 223 for nine, leaving the five-match series level at 2-2.

Aaron argued that the relaid pitch, which offered some grip and had little dew, was suited to an additional spinner. India used Axar Patel and Naman Dhir as their only spin options, with Axar taking one wicket for 45 runs and Naman conceding 19 in his brief spell. West Indies spinners Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase proved more effective, with Motie dismissing Abhishek Sharma and Naman Dhir off consecutive deliveries to disrupt India's chase.

Aaron said Kuldeep could have provided a point of difference on the surface, while India's fast bowlers also struggled to contain the scoring. The teams will meet in Bengaluru for Saturday's series decider.

7. Punam Raut Announces Retirement From International Cricket

Former India batter Punam Raut has retired from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect, bringing an international career that spanned from 2009 to 2021 to a close. The 37-year-old played four Tests, 73 ODIs and 35 T20Is for India, establishing herself primarily as a dependable top-order batter in the 50-over format.

She scored 2,299 ODI runs at an average of 34.83, including three centuries and 15 half-centuries, and featured in three ODI World Cups. Raut was a key contributor to India's run to the 2017 Women's World Cup final, scoring a century against Australia in the league stage before making 86 against England in the final. She also shared a record opening partnership of 320 runs with Deepti Sharma against Ireland in 2017, retiring hurt on 109 while Deepti went on to score 188.

In Tests, Raut recorded a career-best 130 against South Africa in 2014, while her T20I career included four half-centuries. She thanked the Mumbai Cricket Association for its support and described representing India as the greatest honour of her life.

8. Gianni Infantino Apologises to FIFA Council but Faces Questions Over Governance

FIFA president Gianni Infantino apologised to the organisation's ruling council over mistakes in the communication and consultation process surrounding a proposed World Cup investment plan, but failed to satisfy European officials seeking further details. The now-abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which involved a planned $4.2 billion commercial rights arrangement with investors led by Joshua Kushner, was withdrawn in July following widespread opposition. Infantino said the proposal had never been a completed deal, while FIFA maintained that details remained confidential because of ongoing legal proceedings in the United States.

European delegates also sought clarification over the red-card case involving Folarin Balogun at the World Cup and the reported intervention of US President Donald Trump. German football leader Bernd Neuendorf said no satisfactory answers had been provided, while English FA chair Debbie Hewitt questioned whether Infantino was fit to remain president without greater transparency. UEFA is leading efforts to challenge his position ahead of the FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 18 in Rabat, Morocco.

Meanwhile, Infantino's proposal to increase funding for each of FIFA's 211 member associations by $15 million over four years gained ground, illustrating the competing pressures surrounding his leadership.
