Kho Kho World Cup 2024: Nasreen Shaikh - Daugher Of Utensils Seller on Roadside - Aims To Fulfil Her Sister's Dream

Arjuna Awardee Nasreen Shaikh is set to participate in the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup in January 2024. Inspired by her elder sister's unfulfilled dreams, she aims to bring recognition to the sport and her family.

Nasreen Shaikh, an Arjuna Award recipient, is eagerly preparing for the first-ever Kho Kho World Cup. The event is set to take place in India from 13th to 19th January.

Nasreen's journey to becoming a captain and a gold medalist at the Asian Championships was challenging. Her elder sister, who inspired her, couldn't pursue her own Kho Kho dreams due to family constraints.

Nasreen Shaikh Set for Kho Kho World Cup

Nasreen's passion for Kho Kho began in third grade, driven by her sister's unfulfilled aspirations. Despite financial hardships, with her father selling utensils in a roadside market, Nasreen persevered.

Her dedication to the sport earned her the prestigious Arjuna Award last year. She now aims to make both her family and country proud at the upcoming World Cup.

Nasreen believes that the World Cup will bring much-needed recognition and popularity to Kho Kho players. "When I started playing in 3rd class, I also dreamed of playing in the Kho Kho World Cup," she shared. "Now, we are finally going to get recognition from this upcoming Kho Kho World Cup. It is a matter of pride for us."

The introduction of sports science has significantly benefited athletes like Nasreen by reducing injury risks. "We are becoming aware of our fitness through sports science," she explained. "It also helps us identify our weaknesses, which we can then cover easily." This awareness allows players to focus on improving specific areas that might cause injuries.

The national governing body for Kho-Kho in India is the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI), led by President Shri Sudhanshu Mittal. All state associations are affiliated with KKFI, which organises annual national championships for men, women, and juniors. Additionally, Ultimate Kho Kho (UKK), a franchise-based league, is held each year in collaboration with KKFI.

Nasreen's story highlights how determination and support can overcome obstacles. Her journey from humble beginnings to representing India on an international stage serves as an inspiration. As she prepares for the World Cup, Nasreen hopes to fulfil not only her dreams but also those of her sister who motivated her throughout.
