Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the government's commitment to securing the 2036 Olympics hosting rights, aiming to elevate Indian sports and stimulate various sectors.
Speaking at the 38th National Games' opening ceremony, he highlighted the transformative potential of hosting the Olympics for infrastructure development.

Modi stated, "We are pushing for hosting rights of 2036 Olympics, it will take Indian sports to new heights." He elaborated that the Olympics is more than a sporting event; it enhances facilities for athletes, boosts construction, and improves connectivity and transport, significantly benefiting tourism.
The Prime Minister noted that hosting the Olympics would attract global visitors, including athletes. He had previously expressed India's interest in hosting the 2036 Games during the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) session in Mumbai in 2023. The Indian Olympic Association has already submitted a letter of intent to the IOC.
The IOC's decision is expected after 2026, and India must prepare a comprehensive bid outlining its plans for the Games. Competing countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia also seek hosting rights, requiring India to make substantial efforts to surpass their bids.
Addressing athletes at the ceremony, Modi said, "It is our endeavour to enhance your capabilities and we are focussed on supporting you. We consider sports an essential aspect in development of country." He stressed that India’s growing economy should include a thriving sports sector involving coaches, trainers, nutritionists, physiotherapists, doctors, and equipment.
Discussing the National Games, Modi remarked that they are more than just sports events; they celebrate India's diversity and unity under "Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat." He reiterated the government's commitment to creating opportunities for athletes to reach their full potential.
The Prime Minister highlighted various government programmes aiding athletes, such as the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India initiatives. He mentioned that the sports budget has tripled, with significant investments under TOPS benefiting athletes.
Khelo India Youth Games have provided young athletes with advancement opportunities. Similarly, Khelo India University Games offer university students new prospects. The Khelo India Para Games have also enabled para-athletes to achieve success.
Modi also shared fitness advice with young people, urging them to reduce oil consumption by 10% and incorporate more exercise into their routines. "You all should cut down the intake of oil by 10 per cent and add more walks and exercise to your daily routines. We have to fight obesity. It is a major health issue," he advised.
The Prime Minister's remarks underscore his vision of using sports as a catalyst for national development while promoting health and fitness among citizens. As India prepares its bid for the 2036 Olympics, these initiatives reflect a broader strategy to integrate sports into economic growth and societal well-being.
