Neeraj Chopra Classic Postponed Amid India-Pakistan Cross-Border Tensions

The much-anticipated Neeraj Chopra Classic, which was set to make its debut on May 24 at Bengaluru's Sri Kanteerava Stadium, has been postponed until further notice due to the escalating geopolitical situation between India and Pakistan, the event organisers confirmed on Saturday.

Planned as a World Athletics-recognised competition, the meet was expected to showcase some of the finest javelin talent from around the world, headlined by India's Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra. The event was being put together through a joint effort by JSW Sports and the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

Athletes who had confirmed their participation included two-time world champion Anderson Peters, American star Curtis Thompson (the current season leader with 87.76m), 2016 Olympic gold medallist Thomas Röhler, Kenya's Julius Yego, Japan's Genki Dean, Brazil's Luiz Mauricio da Silva, and Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage.

Among the top Indian throwers scheduled to compete were Kishore Jena, Rohit Yadav, Sahil Silwal, and Sachin Yadav. The competition also held significance as a qualification event for the upcoming World Championships.

In light of the current security environment, the organisers announced the postponement, stating:

"The decision has been made after careful thought and consultation, with the well-being of athletes, stakeholders, and the broader community as the top priority."

"We believe in the unifying power of sport. But, in this critical moment, standing firm with the nation matters most. All our gratitude and thoughts at this point are only with our Armed Forces, who are at the forefront of our nation."

This update comes shortly after the suspension of the IPL 2025 season, which was halted due to similar security concerns following military action along the India-Pakistan border. The IPL had already seen one of its matches - between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala - called off midway.

A revised schedule for the Neeraj Chopra Classic is expected to be announced depending on how the situation develops in the coming days.
