The Indian Golf Union (IGU) recently held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The meeting, overseen by Justice (Retd) Rameshwar Singh Malik, successfully addressed key agenda items.
These included approving the previous AGM minutes, adopting the annual report, appointing auditors, and approving financial accounts for 2023-2024. All proposals were unanimously accepted by the members.

Elections for IGU's office-bearers and Governing Council for 2024-2026 were also conducted without opposition. Brijinder Singh was re-elected as President, with S.K. Sharma as Honorary Secretary and Sanjiv Rattan as Honorary Treasurer. Nine members joined the Governing Council, representing various states across India.
Under Brijinder Singh's leadership, the new Governing Council aims to continue enhancing Indian golf. Plans include developing a centre of excellence to nurture talented golfers and ensuring State Golf Associations (SGAs) comply with IGU bylaws.
Strengthening partnerships with global bodies like R&A and the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation is also on their agenda. Brijinder Singh expressed confidence in the team's direction, stating: "The main work of the new team is to carry forward the good work we have done in the last few years."
He emphasised integrating Army-controlled SGAs into the system while maintaining existing associations' operations. Indian amateur golfers have achieved significant milestones recently.
Avani Prashanth ended a 43-year title drought by winning the Queen Sirikit Cup. Kartik Singh, part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), secured a top-10 finish in the Nomura Cup and won this year's Singapore Junior Championship. Aditi Ashok made history by earning India's first female Asian Games golf medal.
Brijinder Singh believes these successes stem from initiatives like the National Squad System, which provides specialised training and support for amateurs. "We feel the good results of the Indian amateurs recently is because of the National Squad system we started," he noted.
The IGU has seen financial growth through cost-cutting measures, increasing revenue from Rs 12 crore in 2021-22 to Rs 24.5 crore in 2023-24. Honorary Treasurer Sanjiv Rattan highlighted efforts to eliminate unnecessary expenses while maintaining essential spending.
The Indian Open has experienced a rise in prize money from $2 million to $2.25 million over two years, thanks to Hero MotoCorp's sponsorship. The DP World Tour event will take place at DLF Golf & Country Club in Gurugram from March 27 to 31, 2025.
IGU plans to expand this flagship event to other locations across India in future editions. S.K. Sharma stated: "We have signed a contract with Hero MotoCorp for the next six years to be the title sponsors of the Indian Open."Overall, IGU's strategic initiatives aim to elevate Indian golf standards while fostering talent development and financial stability within its framework.
