NFL: Indiana football gives defensive coordinator Bryant Haines a new contract amid interest from top competitors

By Tanisha Chhabra

NFL: Indiana football defensive coordinator Bryant Haines has signed a more lucrative contract following strong interest from rival programs. Initially, Haines signed a three-year agreement worth $1.8 million annually, but after several high-profile openings, including positions at Notre Dame and Ohio State, the university has improved his deal.

While exact financial details remain undisclosed, the changes include adjustments to the buyout terms. Under the previous agreement, Haines would have owed 50% of his salary if he left in the first year, but this clause has now been modified.

Haines’ defense played a key role in Indiana’s success this season. The Hoosiers finished with the second-best defense in the country, allowing just 256.3 yards per game. Their scoring defense ranked sixth, surrendering only 15.6 points per game. The team also led the nation in rushing defense, allowing just 80.23 yards per game, a testament to Haines’ effective defensive strategies.

Before joining Indiana, Haines worked under head coach Curt Cignetti at James Madison, where he helped build a top-ranked defense. Haines has been recognized for his work, being named a finalist for the prestigious Broyles Award, which honors the nation’s best assistant coach.

In addition to his success at IU, Haines was linked to potential openings at Penn State after former Indiana head coach Tom Allen moved to Clemson. With strong coaching abilities and a proven track record, Haines’ value has been recognized, and this contract extension reflects the university's commitment to keeping him in Bloomington.

Haines' partnership with Cignetti has been instrumental in IU's defensive turnaround, and his improved deal ensures his continued success with the Hoosiers.
