Bengaluru, Dec 10: The state of Karnataka is mourning the loss of a towering figure as SM Krishna, former Chief Minister of Karnataka and a transformative leader in the sports domain, passed away on Tuesday (December 10) morning.
Known for his multifaceted contributions, Krishna's demise has left an indelible void in the political, technological, and sports arenas.

A passionate tennis enthusiast, Krishna was a pivotal figure in the growth of the sport in Karnataka. Serving as the president of the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) from 1999 to 2020, he led a revolution that placed Karnataka on the global tennis map.
Expressing deep sorrow, R Ashoka, Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and current KSLTA president, said: "It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Shri SM Krishna. On behalf of the KSLTA and all tennis fans in the state, I extend my deepest condolences to Shri Krishna's family at this difficult time. Shri Krishna took tennis to great heights in the state and put the KSLTA on the global tennis map. His passing is a huge loss for the tennis fraternity."
Krishna's tenure as KSLTA president saw a transformation of the association's facilities under the ambitious 'Vision 2000' program. The previously modest setup in Cubbon Park was revamped with international-standard courts, upgraded spectator areas, locker rooms, and a health club, turning Bengaluru into a hub for global tennis.
His efforts brought prestigious events like the Legends Tour, the World Doubles Championships, and WTA tournaments to the state, attracting global stars, including the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena Williams. Krishna also pioneered the decentralization of international tennis events in Karnataka, extending their reach to districts like Gulbarga, Tumkur, Davanagere, and Dharwad.
Former India cricket captain Anil Kumble, who paid his last respects to Krishna, reflected on his immense legacy. "His loss is deeply personal for us as a family and a tremendous loss for Karnataka. His contributions extend far beyond his tenure as Chief Minister - He was instrumental in making Bengaluru the Silicon Valley of India and in elevating Karnataka on the global stage. His humility and vision will always be remembered. In the realm of sports, his leadership was pivotal in transforming tennis infrastructure and bringing international attention to the state."
SM Krishna's contributions were not limited to tennis or even to Karnataka. His efforts as a political leader, especially in shaping Bengaluru into a global IT hub, earned him immense respect both within and beyond India.
The KSLTA, along with sports enthusiasts and citizens of Karnataka, mourns the passing of a visionary who redefined the boundaries of governance and sports leadership. His contributions will continue to inspire generations, and his legacy will remain a guiding light for years to come. The KSLTA extends its heartfelt condolences to Krishna's family during this difficult time.
