Sports Bulletin on January 16

Kuldeep Yadav Resumes Training Ahead of England ODIs and Champions Trophy

Kuldeep Yadav has returned to training as he aims to regain fitness ahead of the ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy. The spinner, recovering from a groin injury sustained during a Test against New Zealand, shared a video of his net session on Instagram with the caption "Locked in." While not included in the T20 squad, Kuldeep will undergo fitness tests and match simulations. India’s ODI series against England begins on January 22, with their Champions Trophy opener scheduled for February 20.

Jasprit Bumrah Dismisses Rumors of Back Injury Bed Rest Ahead of Champions Trophy

Jasprit Bumrah has denied rumors about being bedridden due to a back injury, calling the claims “unreliable.” Reacting to reports of being advised bed rest, Bumrah clarified on social media, humorously debunking the speculation. He wrote: "I know fake news is easy to spread but this made me laugh. Sources unreliable." Team India awaits an update from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) on his recovery, delaying the Champions Trophy squad announcement. The pacer reportedly has swelling, not a fracture, and is expected to undergo rehabilitation at the NCA. Bumrah might play a couple of matches to assess his fitness before rejoining competitive cricket.

Kevin Pietersen Expresses Interest in Becoming India’s Batting Coach

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has publicly shown interest in joining India’s support staff as a batting coach under head coach Gautam Gambhir. This follows reports of the BCCI seeking to bolster support staff after India’s batting struggles led to key series losses, including missing the ICC World Test Championship final spot. Responding to a tweet, Pietersen declared himself “Available.” Known for his illustrious career, Pietersen scored over 13,700 international runs and was the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup’s Player of the Tournament. India’s current staff lacks a dedicated batting coach.

Sitanshu Kotak Emerges as Front-runner for India’s Batting Coach Role

The BCCI is considering appointing Sitanshu Kotak, a former domestic cricket stalwart and current India A head coach, as the batting coach for the Indian men’s team. This move comes after India’s recent Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia, which highlighted the need to bolster the support staff. Kotak, with over 8,000 first-class runs and extensive coaching experience, has worked with India A on tours to Australia, South Africa, and Bangladesh. An official announcement is expected before the Champions Trophy in February 2025.

Anrich Nortje Ruled Out of Champions Trophy Due to Back Injury

South Africa’s pacer Anrich Nortje has been sidelined from the 2025 Champions Trophy due to a back injury, marking his third absence in six ODI ICC events. Nortje, who hasn’t played international cricket since June 2024, was initially selected over Gerald Coetzee for the tournament but failed to recover in time. Coetzee, now fit, is expected to replace him. South Africa’s fast-bowling lineup has faced several injuries this season, with Lungi Ngidi and Wiaan Mulder recently returning but others like Nandre Burger and Lizaad Williams still unavailable.

Smriti Mandhana, Pratika Rawal Lead India to Record 304-Run Win Over Ireland, Seal Series 3-0

India Women achieved their highest ODI victory margin with a 304-run win against Ireland in the third ODI at Rajkot. Smriti Mandhana (135 off 80) smashed the fastest ODI century by an Indian woman, while Pratika Rawal (154 off 129) scored her maiden ton, powering India to a record 435/5. Deepti Sharma's 3/27 helped bowl out Ireland for 131. India swept the series 3-0, with Rawal named Player of the Match for her stellar performance.

Both players could face challenging quarterfinal opponents, with Fritz potentially meeting Daniil Medvedev and De Minaur possibly squaring off against world number one Jannik Sinner.

Swiatek, Raducanu, Gauff Cruise to Australian Open Round Three

Iga Swiatek defeated Rebecca Sramkova 6-0, 6-2 to set up a third-round clash with Emma Raducanu, who overcame Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-5. Swiatek, aiming to reclaim the WTA No. 1 spot, showcased dominance with 16 winners and no break points faced. Coco Gauff advanced with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jodie Burrage, battling back from 3-5 in the second set. Elena Rybakina also progressed, securing a commanding 6-0, 6-3 victory against Iva Jovic.

Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for India’s Ritvik Bollipalli and Anirudh Chandrasekar. Bollipalli, alongside Ryan Seggermann, lost 7-6, 6-1 to sixth seeds Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten, while Chandrasekar and Karol Drzewiecki fell in a close three-set battle to Damir Dzumhur and Petros Tsitsipas, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. Meanwhile, the Indo-French duo of Yuki Bhambri and Albano Olivetti suffered a first-round exit, losing to Australian wildcards Tristan Schoolkate and Adam Walton 6-2, 7-6(3).

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid Dominate Copa del Rey Quarterfinal Berths

Barcelona thrashed Real Betis 5-1 to secure a Copa del Rey quarterfinal spot, with standout performances from Gavi, Jules Kounde, and Lamine Yamal. Despite Betis’s consolation penalty by Vitor Roque, Barca’s dominance was unshaken. Atletico Madrid eased past Elche 4-0, led by Alexander Sorloth's brace. Meanwhile, Leganes staged a comeback to beat Almeria 3-2, and Getafe narrowly edged fourth-tier Pontevedra 1-0, surviving with nine men after two red cards. The quarterfinal lineup promises intense competition in Spain's premier knockout tournament.

Arsenal Triumph in North London Derby as Premier League Race Tightens

Arsenal edged Tottenham 2-1 in the north-London derby, cutting Liverpool's Premier League lead to four points. Gabriel equalized after Son Heung-min's opener, while Leandro Trossard's strike sealed the win. Newcastle United extended their streak with a 3-0 victory over Wolves, thanks to Alexander Isak’s brace and an Anthony Gordon goal. Crystal Palace boosted survival hopes by defeating Leicester 2-0, and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins sunk Everton 1-0, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin missing a crucial chance. Liverpool drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest earlier in the week.
