Indian sport faces a period of scrutiny following the Asian Games, with the Sports Ministry planning a review of the contingent's performance and former national coach Prakash Padukone calling for greater consistency in badminton. In football, Mohun Bagan claimed another major trophy by beating East Bengal in the IFA Shield final.

Cricket brings selection questions ahead of India's second T20I against the West Indies, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi impressing in the nets and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to the national setup drawing attention. Elsewhere, Erling Haaland addressed Manchester City's ongoing legal battle, while Mirra Andreeva advanced to the China Open semifinals.

1. Mohun Bagan beat East Bengal 1-0 to win IFA Shield 2026

Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated East Bengal 1-0 in the IFA Shield final on Thursday to secure their 22nd title in the competition and claim their second major trophy of the season. Samir Zeljkovic scored the decisive goal in the 45th minute, controlling a pass from Sahal Abdul Samad before finishing past goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa. East Bengal had threatened early through Edmund Lalrindika but were unable to convert their chances. Despite introducing Lukasz Zwolinski and Ake Arnaud Loba in the second half, East Bengal could not find an equaliser, with Mohun Bagan holding on to secure the Kolkata Derby victory. East Bengal now turn their attention to the AFC Champions League 2, while Mohun Bagan prepare for their ISL campaign.

2. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi impresses in nets ahead of India vs West Indies 2nd T20I

Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi caught attention with an aggressive net session ahead of India's second T20I against the West Indies in Ranchi on Friday. The Bihar batter repeatedly cleared the boundary as he continued to press his case for a place in India's top order, although Sanju Samson currently occupies the opening spot. Ishan Kishan also impressed at his home ground, taking on the spinners and striking several balls into the stands. India assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak praised Kishan's maturity since his return to the national setup, while confirming that the team had not finalised its playing XI. India won the opening match in Lucknow by eight wickets and will look to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

3. India coach explains Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to T20I squad

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak believes Bhuvneshwar Kumar's experience and recent IPL performances could have influenced the selectors' decision to bring the seamer back for the upcoming New Zealand series. The 36-year-old has taken 90 wickets in 87 T20Is, although his last appearance in the format came against New Zealand in November 2022. Kotak pointed to the value of experience, particularly when India are managing Jasprit Bumrah's workload and giving opportunities to younger bowlers. He also stressed the importance of bench strength, acknowledging that rotation can sometimes affect results but backing India's depth to minimise the impact. India currently lead their T20I series against the West Indies 1-0, with the second match scheduled for October 9 in Ranchi.

4. Sports Ministry to review India's Asian Games performance on October 13

The Sports Ministry will review India's performance at the 2026 Asian Games alongside representatives of the National Sports Federations on October 13. India finished fourth in the medal standings, matching its position from the previous edition, but its total fell to 85 medals - 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze - a decline of 21 medals from Hangzhou 2022. The review will examine underwhelming performances in shooting, athletics and badminton, where India's medal count dropped from three to one. Officials will also assess the Target Olympics Podium Scheme, which provided ₹27.16 crore in support to 34 of the 89 experienced athletes who returned without a medal. The ministry is additionally expected to examine how injured athletes received clearance to compete, following several withdrawals and non-starts during the Games.

5. Erling Haaland urges Manchester City to stick together amid financial charges

Erling Haaland has called for unity at Manchester City after an independent commission found the Premier League club guilty of serious financial-rule breaches. City have appealed the verdict and maintain their innocence, with potential sanctions including points deductions, fines or relegation if the decision is upheld. Speaking ahead of Sunday's trip to Liverpool, Haaland urged the squad to remain positive and focus on winning matches despite the uncertainty surrounding the club. Manchester City have won all five of their Premier League games this season and lead Arsenal by three points. Haaland also described facing Liverpool at Anfield as a special occasion, despite the prospect of a hostile reception from the home crowd.

6. Mirra Andreeva beats Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach China Open semifinals

Mirra Andreeva defeated 19th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6(4), 7-6(3) to reach the China Open semifinals for the first time. The victory marked Andreeva's first win over Alexandrova after losing their previous two meetings without taking a set. Andreeva had led 5-2 in the second set and served for the match at 5-3 before Alexandrova fought back to force a tiebreak, where the teenager regained control to seal the result in one hour and 53 minutes. The win also made Andreeva the youngest player to reach the China Open semifinals since Agnes Szavay in 2007 and took her to a fourth career WTA 1000 semifinal. She will face fellow rising player Nikola Bartunkova, who defeated Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-0.

7. Prakash Padukone calls India's Asian Games badminton performance disappointing

Former national coach Prakash Padukone has described India's badminton performance at the 2026 Asian Games as disappointing, arguing that the team should have matched or improved on its previous medal tally. India secured only a team bronze, while its players exited the individual competitions after four quarterfinal defeats. Padukone called for greater consistency and suggested that leading players identify four or five key tournaments each season to target peak performance. He also urged Lakshya Sen and India's doubles pairs to emulate PV Sindhu's continued hunger for major titles, pointing to her recent Japan Open triumph. With a proposed 15-point, best-of-three scoring format set to be introduced next year, Padukone believes players may need to adopt more aggressive strategies and adapt their games.
