1. India make winning start at Commonwealth Games as Lovlina assures first medal

India are guaranteed their first medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games even before the official opening ceremony after boxer Lovlina Borgohain advanced directly to the women's 75kg semifinals.

With only five competitors in the weight category, Lovlina received a bye into the last four, ensuring at least a bronze medal. The Olympic bronze medallist will face Tuvalu's Tarona Khanum Badi Pasoni Taafaki on July 31 for a place in the gold medal bout, as she looks to make amends for her quarterfinal exit at the Birmingham Games four years ago.

2. India begin Zimbabwe T20I series with emphatic win

India snapped their T20I losing streak with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the opening match of the five-game series in Harare.

Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi starred with a breathtaking 18-ball half-century, while Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav dismantled Zimbabwe's top order to restrict the hosts to 125 for 7. Chasing 126, India cruised home with 40 balls to spare as Shreyas Iyer's side registered its first T20I victory since winning the World Cup earlier this year.

3. Putul stuns world champion as India shine on Commonwealth Games Day 1

India enjoyed a strong opening day at the Commonwealth Games, highlighted by Putul Sonowal's upset victory over reigning World Outdoors champion Ryan Bester in men's lawn bowls.

World No. 21 Putul edged Bester in a tense tie-break after the pair split the opening two sets. In the women's pairs, Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh defeated Malta to move second in their group, while Lovlina Borgohain's direct passage into the boxing semifinals added further momentum to India's campaign.

4. Afghanistan to host India in Delhi for historic T20I series

Afghanistan will officially host India on Indian soil for the first time in international cricket when the two teams meet for a three-match T20I series in Delhi this September.

Unable to stage home internationals because of longstanding security concerns, Afghanistan have used Indian venues since 2015. Although the matches will be played at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, Afghanistan will be the designated home side, making it a unique arrangement in international cricket.

5. Shreyas Iyer creates unique toss record

India captain Shreyas Iyer entered the record books by becoming the first player in men's T20I history to win the toss in each of his first eight matches as captain.

The feat surpasses the previous record of seven consecutive toss wins held by Bahamas captain Gregory Taylor. Iyer also equalled England great Wally Hammond's 88-year-old international record and overtook MS Dhoni's mark of seven successive toss wins by an India T20I captain.

6. China Open: Sindhu knocked out as Wang and Chen progress

Japan Open champion PV Sindhu's China Open campaign came to an end after Olympic champion Chen Yufei staged a remarkable comeback to reach the quarterfinals.

Trailing 20-16 in the second game, Chen saved four game points before completing a dramatic three-game victory. World No. 2 Wang Zhiyi also advanced, ending a three-match losing streak against South Korea's Sim Yu Jin to keep alive her bid for a third consecutive China Open title.

7. Cricket Australia open to Ashes Test in India

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg says the governing body would be open to the idea of staging an Ashes Test in India if it helps grow the format.

While stressing there are currently no plans for such a fixture, Greenberg acknowledged Cricket Australia's strong relationship with both the ECB and the BCCI. He also pointed to the increasingly crowded international calendar as the biggest obstacle to scheduling marquee events outside the traditional bilateral framework.

8. Barcelona complete Karim Adeyemi signing

Barcelona have signed Germany forward Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth an initial €22 million plus add-ons.

The 24-year-old becomes Barcelona's second major signing of the summer after Anthony Gordon and revealed that head coach Hansi Flick played a decisive role in convincing him to join. Adeyemi said he is looking forward to forming an attacking partnership with Lamine Yamal as Barcelona continue their squad rebuild.

9. Sachin Tendulkar speaks on NEET protests

Sachin Tendulkar has urged the country to protect the values of honesty and merit amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the NEET examination.

In a social media post, the cricket legend reflected on lessons taught by his father, saying "failure is okay, cheating is not," while stressing that hard work should always be rewarded. Former cricketers Shikhar Dhawan, Mohammad Kaif and Irfan Pathan have also voiced their views on the issue in recent days.

10. India U-19 clinch Youth Test series in Sri Lanka

India Under-19 sealed the two-match Youth Test series 1-0 with a comprehensive 211-run victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Leg-spinner Rohit Yadav claimed four wickets while pacer C. Venkata took three as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 260 chasing a target of 472. The victory completed a strong turnaround for India after they had lost the preceding Youth ODI series 2-1.
