Collapsed Mid-Match After Strong Start

The veteran paddler had begun strongly, taking a 2-0 lead and was ahead 5-4 in the third game when he suddenly collapsed on court at around 12:15 PM.

Officials and medical staff responded immediately, with paramedics stationed at the venue administering emergency treatment, including CPR and chest compressions. Despite their swift efforts, Raj did not regain consciousness.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital within minutes, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

Cause of Death Confirmed

Initial reports suggested cardiac arrest, and a subsequent post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as cardiac tamponade, a serious medical condition where fluid accumulation around the heart affects its ability to function properly.

Raj’s teammates from Tamil Nadu were present with him during the incident, and his family in Chennai was informed soon after.

Arrangements are currently being made to transport his mortal remains back to Chennai, accompanied by a teammate.

Tributes Pour In from Table Tennis Fraternity

The tragic incident has deeply affected the table tennis community across the country. The Pune District Table Tennis Association and the Maharashtra State Table Tennis Association expressed heartfelt condolences, remembering Raj as a dedicated sportsperson and a gentle, soft-spoken individual who brought warmth both on and off the table.

TTFI president Meghana Ahlawat also conveyed her sympathies on behalf of the national body. She extended condolences to the Veterans Committee, the Tamil Nadu Table Tennis Association, and the wider fraternity.

The federation paid tribute to Raj not just as a player, but as a personality - recalling his love for music and singing, which made him a beloved figure in social gatherings.

A Loss Beyond the Sport

Raj’s passing is a stark reminder of the unpredictability of life, even in a setting defined by passion and sport. Known for his commitment to table tennis well into his senior years, he exemplified the spirit of lifelong athletic pursuit.
