New Delhi, Nov 29: Even as the ICC presides over a board meeting over the future of Champions Trophy 2025 goes on, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that Team India is unlikely to participate in the tournament, scheduled to be held in Pakistan.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal cited security concerns as the primary reason behind the decision, echoing a similar stance taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Speaking to the media, Jaiswal said, "The BCCI has issued a statement. They have highlighted security concerns, and therefore, it is unlikely that the team will be going there." This announcement comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions between the two neighbouring nations, which have often impacted bilateral cricketing ties.
The BCCI has already conveyed to the ICC and PCB that due to the safety concerns of players travelling to Pakistan, the External Affairs Ministry hasn't given the team its approval to travel to the neighbouring country.
Given the current security situation and political climate, the BCCI maintained that sending the national team would pose unnecessary risks and urged the PCB and ICC to go for a hybrid model instead wherein India can play their games at a neutral venue. While the Champions Trophy is a marquee event, the BCCI's firm stance is aligned with the Indian government's policy on Pakistan.
The ICC faces a significant challenge in ensuring the tournament's smooth conduct if one of its biggest stakeholders, India, opts out. The absence of Team India could affect broadcasting revenues, viewership, and overall tournament prestige. It remains unclear whether the ICC would consider shifting the venue or engage in negotiations to find a middle ground.
India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2012-13, with encounters limited to ICC events. Political tensions and security concerns have often been cited as reasons for the absence of bilateral tours. Matches between the two nations are among the most-watched events globally, adding to the significance of any potential clash in an ICC tournament.
With security concerns looming large, India's participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy appears doubtful. The ball now lies in the ICC's court to address the situation and ensure the tournament's success.
