Vinod Kambli - the name is associated with flamboyance. The former India star with an abundance of talent was set to make the world his oyster, but the truth has told another tale.
Kambli, the former India batter has always been in the headlines for controversial reasons. The once flamboyant Indian cricketer failed to do justice to his enormous talent, and couldn't replicate what his childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar did.

But if we take away all the controversies and the pretexts, Kambli looks like a shadow of his past at present. The former India player was recently present at an event dedicated to the late Ramakant Achrekar, and MyKhel had a chance to have a glimpse of him.
Meeting Vinod Kambli at the Ramakant Achrekar Memorial Ceremony in Mumbai was an unforgettable experience. The once flamboyant cricketer, known for his vibrant attire and larger-than-life personality during his playing days, now presented a different image.
At Shivaji Park, Kambli sat among children, tirelessly signing autographs and posing for pictures, his smile never fading. Watching him bless kids who touched his feet revealed his softer, nurturing side. Yet, there was a tinge of sadness. Time had visibly taken a toll on him - his health seemed frail, his walk unsteady, and his speech slightly slurred.
Despite the change, his spirit remained intact. It was heartwarming to see how much joy he brought to everyone around him, even as he battled his personal struggles. It reminded me of the humanity behind the cricketing legend-a story of resilience, humility, and love for the game.

His long-time friend Sachin Tendulkar and Maharashtra's political leader Raj Thackeray inaugurated the Ramakant Achrekar Memorial at Shivaji Park, and just a few metres away from that, a stage was set for all the dignitaries to reminisce their thoughts on their Guru.
Vinod needed an aid to get him up to the stage, and when he was asked about his Guru, the flamboyance surfaced again. He sang the Hindi song 'Kahe Ghabraye' on the stage with a broken voice, which numbed the crowd but spoke about his spirit inside, which still loves to have a flight.
He also had a heartfelt moment with Sachin Tendulkar and as the India legend was reminiscing about their moments during the coaching days of Achrekar, Kambli was seen laughing and living those memories. The duo were seen talking after the ceremony was over and as Sachin was being serenaded by thousands of people, Kambli was more of a solitary figure.
Before the ceremony, MyKhel had a chance to talk with the India star. It was not a formal interview of sorts, but Kambli spoke about his love for Bengali sweets and also managed to sign an autograph for me. As we acknowledged him for his contribution to Indian cricket, the 52-year-old could just nod with a smile and a firm handshake. When he realized about Kolkata, his eyes glittered as he said that he loved 'Chomchom', a popular sweet of Bengal.
It was a different story altogether. Kambli, as the world is known, was not present at the Shivaji Park. Although people will have different thoughts about him, the current state just leaves one sad for him. Some reports questioned if the player is still living a bohemian life, but the short reply of that would be NO.
Vinod Kambli's name shall always remain intact in Indian cricket's chronicles with bittersweet regards. People down the line may wonder why such a player, who had a Test average of more than 50 had such a brief career for India.
Discipline, Life Style do play a crucial part in one athlete's life, and there may be arguments that Kambli's failure to adhere to a simpler life cost him his career, and perhaps his health. But at this juncture of life, all we can do is appreciate him for his services to Indian cricket and pray for his recovery.
