Nick's older sister Haley has played a significant role in his career. She is the head coach at Ravensong Aquatic Club in Qualicum Beach, BC, Canada. Haley has also competed at the national level in Canada. Nick has been coached by Haley, who he describes as both caring and demanding.

Nick's talent was evident early on. In 2018, he was named Male Para Swimmer of the Meet at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Edmonton, AB, Canada. Although he was too young to compete internationally at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo, Japan, his performance stood out.
