Rain, Technology and Packed Stands: India Afghanistan ODI Underscores Dharamshala's Sporting Rise

Shimla, June 22: The recently concluded India-Afghanistan One Day International cricket match, which took place on June 13 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala, not only proved to be a great sporting contest but also reiterated Dharamshala's status as one of the best sports tourism destinations of India.

Taking place amidst the magnificent landscape of the Dhauladhar mountain ranges, the match once again showcased the area's capability to provide state-of-the-art sports facilities coupled with awe-inspiring surroundings.

Rain Technology and Packed Stands India Afghanistan ODI Underscores Dharamshala s Sporting Rise

Post a continuous rainfall period spanning more than fourteen hours, the ground staff
of the stadium ensured that the field was ready for play within half an hour. This was
due to the implementation of the SIS Air vacuum drainage system, thus making the
Dharamshala stadium one of the only two cricket grounds in the world to have
adopted this advanced technology.

The ODI was also a spectacle in itself for all the visitors and fans of cricket. The
highly technologically driven drone show of HPCA mesmerized the audience by
showcasing fantastic displays of cricket, patriotism, the rich culture and tradition of
Himachal Pradesh, and depictions of Lord Mahadev through the art of flying drones,
thus giving an additional flavor to tourism and entertainment.

The seven-wicket triumph by India over Afghanistan is not only important in providing
India with a 1-0 lead in the series, but it further emphasizes the role of cricket as a
tool in developing sports tourism in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Dharamshala
saw a substantial increase in tourist numbers following a productive period in the
IPL, as hotels and other facilities experienced a massive 600% increase in bookings
prior to the fixtures.

Under the visionary leadership of Anurag Singh Thakur, former President of HPCA
and Member of Parliament, Dharamshala has evolved into a world-class cricket
destination hosting international matches, ICC tournaments, and IPL fixtures.

Commenting on its growth, he said, "Our vision was to make Dharamshala a
global cricketing destination while showcasing Himachal Pradesh to the world. Today, every major cricket event strengthens the region's sporting legacy,
boosts tourism, and creates economic opportunities for local communities."

However, apart from its success in playing host to the Indian Premier League
matches, HPCA stadium's pursuit of excellence has been acknowledged through an
award presented by the IPL 2026 Pitch & Ground Award.

Apart from cricket, the efforts of HPCA to provide infrastructure, train talent, and promote women's cricket have contributed to making Himachal Pradesh a center for sports and tourism
