Following the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, PH suffered two shoulder injuries. These injuries prevented him from training for five months in 2009. Despite these setbacks, he continued to excel in his sport.
PH is married to Liz Johnson, a decorated Para swimmer who has represented Great Britain. She won medals in SB6 100m breaststroke at three consecutive Paralympic Games. PH studied Physical Education at Estacio de Sa University in Rio de Janeiro and later pursued a degree in leadership and business management at Northumbria University.
PH is affiliated with SC Corinthians Paulista in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Outside of swimming, he enjoys kitesurfing, windsurfing, tennis, and video games. His unique pre-competition ritual involves wearing socks and trainers of different pairs.
In 2019, PH was named Man of the Year by GQ magazine in Brazil. He was inducted into the Pernambuco State Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2014, he received the Para Sports Achiever of the Year award in Manchester, England.
PH credits his parents as his biggest influence. His guiding philosophy is simple: "If you really want to do something, you'll find a way. If you don't, you'll find an excuse."
PH lived in Manchester from 2012 to 2014. This experience helped him regain his love for swimming. He has also served as a member of the World Para Swimming Athletes' Advisory Group and volunteered with Dreamflight, a UK charity.
Looking ahead, PH aims to win a medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. With his dedication and past achievements, he remains a strong contender for future success.
