Rafal Wilk Biography

Rafa's daughters, Gabriela and Wiktoria, have represented Poland in acrobatic gymnastics. His father, Jan Wilk, was a speedway racer. Rafa himself competed in speedway racing at the national level before a spinal cord injury during a race in 2006 changed his path. He began Para cycling in 2010 at age 36 in Zamosc, Poland.

Transition to Para Cycling

Rafa made his debut for Poland in 2011. He initially tried Para skiing after his accident because he had been a ski instructor. However, he switched to Para cycling after borrowing a bike from a colleague and realising it was his true calling.

Awards and Recognition

In 2023, Rafa was inducted into the Rzeszow Walk of Fame in Poland. In 2017, he received the Officer's Cross of Order of Polonia Restituta from the president of Poland and became an Honorary Citizen of Rzeszow. He was also the flag bearer for Poland at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2013, he was honoured with the Knight's Cross of Order of Polonia Restituta by the president of Poland. In 2012, he was named Para Athlete of the Year in Poland.

Personal Philosophy and Influence

Rafa credits his father as his biggest influence. His personal philosophy is simple: "If you want to do it, you will find a way. If you don't want to do it, you will find a reason." This mindset has driven him through various challenges and successes.

Ambitions

Looking ahead, Rafa aims to compete at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. His dedication to sport remains unwavering as he continues to train under coach Jakub Pieniazek.

First Steps Post-Accident

In early 2017, Rafa took his first steps following his accident using an exoskeleton during a clinic test. This experience was transformative for him, expanding his horizons and offering a new perspective on life.

Other Activities

Rafa has established a charitable organisation called 'There is one sport - Rafal Wilk Foundation'. This foundation supports Para athletes in achieving their sporting dreams. Additionally, he was featured in a film titled 'Rafal Wilk - A Man of Iron', which chronicles his life before and after his accident.

Two Birthdays

Rafa celebrates two birthdays each year: his actual birthday on 9 December and the anniversary of his accident on 3 May. He views the date of his accident as a day of rebirth, marking the start of his new life.

Rafa's journey from a speedway racer to a celebrated Para cyclist is inspiring. His story highlights resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to sport.
