In February 2020, Richard dislocated his shoulder during training in Sierra Nevada, Spain. He resumed training by March 2020. Earlier, he damaged the cartilage in his hip joint in December 2015 and fully recovered by March 2017.
Richard took up Para cycling in 2016 after an accident led to amputations. He returned to cycling three months post-accident on a bike adapted by his father and brother. This experience helped him realise his potential and face challenges positively.
Richard trains six days a week, dedicating up to 25 hours to his sport. His family and friends are his main sources of influence, while US motorcycle racer Kevin Schwantz is his hero. His philosophy is centred on maintaining a positive attitude when facing difficulties.
Richard was named flag bearer for Spain at the opening ceremony of the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo alongside Para swimmer Michelle Alonso. In 2019, he received the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Merit from the Spanish government and was named Best Para Cyclist in the C classification by the International Cycling Union (UCI).
He has also been honoured with several other awards throughout his career, including the Silver Medal of the Royal Order of Merit in 2009, the City of Valencia Sports Merit Award in Spain in 2009, and Para Athlete of the Year at the Nostresport Awards in Spain in 2008. A sports hall in Benimamet, Spain, was named after him in 2002.
After more than two decades of competing internationally in Para swimming, Richard explored Para alpine skiing and Para table tennis before focusing on Para cycling in 2017. He found these sports enjoyable but ultimately chose cycling due to his agility and skills.
Looking ahead, Richard aims to win gold at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. His journey from swimming to cycling showcases his adaptability and determination to excel across different sports disciplines.
