Sam's father found a pedal system that allowed her to ride a bike again. This innovation helped her regain balance and confidence. She began training and after two years of racing in non-Para competitions, she switched to Para cycling in 2012.
Sam's journey has not been without setbacks. In May 2015, she was hit by a car, resulting in a concussion, shoulder pain, and a twisted vertebra in her neck. This incident sidelined her for one month. In 2021, she sustained a double fracture in her skull during a group training session. This injury kept her out of action for 10 months and meant she missed the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
Despite these challenges, Sam found inspiration during her recovery. She got a tattoo of a hummingbird surrounded by blue flowers on her inner right forearm. The hummingbird symbolised that challenging times were over and joy was coming. This motivated her to keep moving forward.
One of Sam's most memorable achievements is winning two gold medals at the 2022 World Championships in Baie-Comeau, Canada. Her hero is US road cyclist Kristin Armstrong, who has inspired her throughout her career.
Looking ahead, Sam aims to compete at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. She views this as an opportunity to showcase how much she has improved as an athlete and person since her injury.
Sam holds a degree in Communications from DeVry University and has studied for a master's degree in accounting at the same institution. She and her husband Andrew run Bosco Bike Fits, a business that helps cyclists get a better fit on their bikes.
In addition to her professional pursuits, Sam has volunteered as a mentor for Classroom Champions, Ready Set Gold!, One Revolution, and Promise Scholars. These organisations aim to inspire students and support their development.
Sam's journey is marked by resilience and determination. Despite numerous setbacks, she continues to pursue her passion for cycling while contributing to various causes. Her story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes and individuals facing challenges.
