Garrote's journey into Para cycling began with a deep sense of freedom and happiness. "I loved the feeling of freedom. It brought my happiness back. A new Sergio was born," he said. His personal coach, Oriol Llesuy, has been instrumental in his development as an athlete.

Training for Paris 2024

In preparation for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, Garrote relocated to La Molina, Spain. He trains at high altitude in the Pyrenees mountain range. "Training in the Pyrenees offers so many possibilities for training, besides the outstanding landscape," he noted. His training begins at around 1600 metres above sea level and can reach as high as 2300 metres.

Memorable Achievements

One of Garrote's most memorable moments was winning two medals at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. This achievement solidified his status as a top Para cyclist. In 2022, he received the 'Campions Valors' Trophy from the government of Catalonia in Spain.

Awards and Recognition

Garrote has been honoured multiple times for his contributions to Para sports. In 2021, he was named Para Sportsman of the Year by the Sports Federation Union of Catalonia. Additionally, he was named Cyclist of the Year by the Catalonian Cycling Federation in both 2019 and 2021.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, Garrote aims to win two gold medals at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. His dedication to training and his achievements so far make this an attainable goal.

Other Roles

In addition to his athletic career, Garrote became a member of the Barcelona Municipal Sports Council in Spain in 2024. This role allows him to contribute to the development of sports at a municipal level.
