Simone Kruger Biography

She was introduced to athletics by her older sister. "I started when my sister wanted to do discus and shot put. I am a few years younger than her but I did it with her and competed with her for fun. And then I started to enjoy it a lot and then began to do well," she said.

Coaching and Family Influence

Her father, Andries Kruger, has played a significant role in her career, serving as her coach. His guidance has been instrumental in shaping her into the athlete she is today. She cites him as a major influence in her life.

Achievements and Awards

She has an impressive list of accolades. She won gold and set a world record in the F38 discus at the 2023 World Championships in Paris, France. This achievement stands out as one of her most memorable moments.

In 2023, she received the Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability award at the Athletics South Africa Awards. She was also named Sportswoman with a Disability of the Year at the 2022 Tshwane Sports Council Women in Sport Awards. In 2021, she was recognised as the Most Promising Athlete at the Gauteng Sport Awards.

Philosophy and Role Models

Her philosophy is clear: "If you put the work in, you're going to get the results you want. You can't just say, 'I want to achieve that and I'm going to do it one day'. The Olympics or Paralympics, for example, are a four-year journey. It's four years of hard work."

She looks up to South African Para sprinter Ilse Hayes as her hero, drawing inspiration from Hayes' achievements and dedication.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, she aims to win gold at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. This goal drives her daily training and preparation.

Personal Interests

Outside of athletics, she enjoys reading, hiking, and meeting friends for coffee. She is fluent in Afrikaans and English, adding to her diverse skill set.

Her journey from a young girl competing for fun with her sister to becoming a world champion is a testament to her dedication and hard work. With her eyes set on future goals, she continues to inspire many in the sports community.
