He underwent joint replacement surgery on his knee after a fall from a broken ramp during a training camp in the Netherlands.
In August 2018, Mikiti experienced inflammation in his pelvis, which kept him out of competition until February 2019. Despite these setbacks, he returned to the sport with renewed determination.
Under the guidance of coach Sho Otaka since 2018, Mikiti trains six kilometres daily in his wheelchair. His dedication paid off when he received the Ono Motoyoshi Memorial Physical Education Award in 2020 and the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Award in 2012.
Mikiti began studying at Kobe Gakuin University in 2009 with aspirations to become a physiotherapist. However, he left his studies in 2010 after being invited to train in Chiba by Shingo Kunieda and coach Hiromichi Maruyama following his victory at the Kobe Open.
Off the court, Mikiti enjoys watching movies and taking photographs. His autobiography 'Beyond the Wall I Got Over' was released in 2018, offering insights into his life and career.
Looking ahead, Mikiti aims to win a gold medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. His journey continues to inspire many as he strives for excellence in wheelchair tennis.
