She took up sports through the Bennett Blazers programme in Baltimore, MD. "I got to try everything," she said, recalling her weekends spent trying various sports like basketball, swimming, and archery.
McFadden's career is marked by numerous achievements. She won gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games. In 2013, she became the first person to win the Boston Marathon, London Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and New York Marathon in the same year. She repeated this feat in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
In addition to wheelchair racing, she represented the USA in cross-country skiing at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, winning a silver medal.
McFadden faced significant health challenges in 2017 due to blood clots. Despite undergoing three surgeries and a lengthy recovery period of 18-20 months, she competed at the World Championships in London that year.
"They went in and looked at the clots in more detail," she said about her treatment. The condition left her with lymphedema, which she manages to this day.
McFadden's accolades are numerous. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame by Road Runners Club of America in 2020. Forbes named her in their '30 Under 30 Class Of 2017'. She received multiple awards from the United States Olympic Committee and other organisations for her outstanding performances.
In 2020, McFadden co-produced the documentary "Rising Phoenix," which won two Sports Emmy Awards. The film explores the history of the Paralympic Movement and follows nine Para athletes' journeys. "We don't have a history book on the Paralympics," she said about the documentary's importance.
She also established the Tatyana McFadden Foundation to support young athletes with impairments. Additionally, she serves on the board of directors for the Illinois Spina Bifida Association.
