Alcaraz Advances In US Open, Keeps Focus Off Nadal's Grand Slam Record

Carlos Alcaraz overcomes Li Tu at the US Open, aiming for a historic win while staying indifferent to Rafael Nadal's grand slam record. His victory marks a significant step towards achieving a rare calendar-year grand slam.

Carlos Alcaraz stated he is not focused on Rafael Nadal's grand slam record after his victory over Australian qualifier Li Tu at the US Open. Alcaraz overcame a challenging second set to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at Flushing Meadows. He served eight aces and produced 50 winners compared to his opponent's 19.

The Spaniard began the match strongly, securing a set and a break before four double faults in the second set allowed Tu back into the game. However, Alcaraz, ranked third in the world, recovered by dominating the third set and confirmed his progression to the next round with a love game in the final set.

Alcaraz Eyes US Open Win, Not Nadal Record

Alcaraz aims to become the third man in history, after Rod Laver and Nadal, to win the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open in the same calendar year. "Well, after this interview I'm going to try to pretend I never heard that," Alcaraz told ESPN when asked about this statistic. "Obviously it would be a great achievement if I make it, but it is going to be difficult."

The Olympic silver medallist will face Botic van de Zandschulp in the next round after the Dutchman defeated Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. This upcoming match will be crucial for Alcaraz as he continues his pursuit of grand slam success.

Impressive Winning Streak

Alcaraz's triumph at Flushing Meadows marked his 15th consecutive grand slam victory. His last loss in a major tournament was against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open quarter-finals. This winning streak highlights Alcaraz's consistent performance on the grand slam stage.

Among players who began their careers in the Open Era, only John McEnroe (69) has achieved 60 men's singles match wins at grand slam events in fewer matches than Alcaraz (70), following his win over Tu.

This remarkable achievement underscores Alcaraz's rapid rise and exceptional talent within men's tennis. His ability to maintain such high performance levels consistently places him among tennis elites.

As he progresses further into the tournament, all eyes will be on whether he can continue this impressive form and possibly achieve one of tennis's most prestigious feats.
