Alcaraz Deems Monfils Defeat At Cincinnati Open As Career's Toughest Match

Carlos Alcaraz admitted to experiencing his career's most challenging match after a surprising loss to Gael Monfils at the Cincinnati Open. Despite a strong start, Alcaraz struggled on Centre Court, attributing the defeat to an inability to adapt and control his frustration.

Carlos Alcaraz described his performance as the worst of his career after losing to Gael Monfils at the Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard initially dominated, winning the first set before rain halted play with the second set tied at 6-6. When play resumed a day later, Monfils took control, winning the tie-break and final set to advance to the last 16.

Alcaraz found it challenging to adjust while playing on Centre Court. "It was really, really tough for me. I felt like it was the worst match that I've ever played in my career. Couldn't play, honestly," Alcaraz said. He mentioned practising well before the tournament and feeling great on other courts but struggled with faster balls and higher bounces on Centre Court.

Alcaraz's Toughest Match: Monfils Defeat

His frustration was evident when he smashed his racquet four times during the third set. "I felt sometimes that I wanted to break the racquet," Alcaraz added. "It never happened before because I could control myself in those situations, in those feelings, and most of the time I could control myself."

Alcaraz admitted he couldn't manage his emotions during this match. "I couldn't control myself because, as I said, I was feeling that I was not playing any kind of tennis. So, it was really frustrating for me," he explained. He even considered leaving the court due to his frustration.

Reflecting on his experience, Alcaraz noted that many players face similar moments in their careers where they struggle to maintain composure. "There is some point that I want to leave the court. I don't want to be on the court anymore. So, it was a really hurtful moment for me, and that's it," he said.

Looking Ahead to US Open

Despite this setback, Alcaraz remains focused on his upcoming challenge at the US Open starting August 26 in New York. He will be aiming for his third grand slam title of the year.

Alcaraz's candid reflection highlights the emotional and mental challenges athletes face during high-stakes matches. His determination to bounce back will be closely watched as he prepares for future tournaments.
