Sensational Dolgopolov packs Soderling

By Biswajeet Panda
Melbourne, Jan 24:There hasn't been too many major shocks in the 2011 edition of Australian Open. But Alexander Dolgopolov ensured that it doesn't continue for long as he caused the biggest upset so far, by beating Robin Soderling.

Ukrainian Dolgopolov ranked World No.46 was expected to be easy meat for the fourth seeded Soderling. And the first set which Soderling won 6-1 only strengthened the belief that Soderling would make a quarter-final appearance. But that was not to be as the unheralded Dolgopolov, overcame the disappointment and probably the fear of loss as well to come back strongly and win the next two sets 6-3 6-1.

Just as everyone was starting to take note of a possible upset, Soderling came into his own and won the fourth set 6-4. But the Ukrainian had tasted blood and had nothing to lose in the clash. He played aggressively and intelligently to win the fourth set 6-2 and eventually the match 1-6 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-2.

Clearly elated with the result, Dolgopolv said, "I started not really well. I was serving really bad," and added, "I mean, with a player like that on the baseline, he's really good. So, I mean, the first set I was struggling, and a break down in the second. I came back somehow and started to play better and better with every set. I'm really happy I'm through to the quarterfinal."

He will now take on Andy Murray in the quarter-finals.
