Angelique Kerber's illustrious tennis career concluded in the Paris Olympics quarter-finals. On Wednesday, Zheng Qinwen staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the former world number one. Despite Kerber's valiant efforts, she succumbed to the sixth seed with scores of 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) at Roland-Garros.The match began with both players exchanging breaks in the first set, which required a tie-breaker to determine the winner. Kerber managed to edge ahead initially. The second set saw a closely contested battle, but Zheng clinched the last three games to push for a deciding set.In the third set, another tie-break was necessary to decide the victor. Although Kerber fought back after facing three consecutive match points, she lost her serve on the penultimate point. Zheng capitalised on this opportunity and secured her place in the semi-finals.Before the tournament, Kerber had announced that it would be her final competition. The 36-year-old has had an impressive career, winning three Grand Slam titles. She made history in Paris by reaching her third women's singles quarter-final at the Olympics since 1988, matching Arantxa Sanchez Vicario's record.Kerber is also among an elite group of only 15 players who have held the world number one ranking for over 30 weeks since the WTA Rankings were introduced in 1975. She spent a total of 34 weeks at the top spot.Zheng Qinwen will now face either world number one Iga Swiatek or Danielle Collins for a chance to compete for an Olympic medal.
