Amanda Anisimova Sets Sights On Victory After Historic Canadian Open Final Entry

Amanda Anisimova celebrates reaching the Canadian Open final against Jessica Pegula, marking a historic low-ranking finalist position in 40 years. Anisimova's return to tennis highlights her resilience and ambition for more achievements.

Amanda Anisimova celebrated a significant milestone after securing a spot in the Canadian Open final against Jessica Pegula. Anisimova achieved her fourth top-20 victory of the week in Toronto by defeating Emma Navarro 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 on Sunday. This win makes her, now ranked 132nd globally after a break from tennis in 2023, the lowest-ranked finalist at the Canadian Open in four decades.

For the first time since 2001, two American players will compete in the Canadian Open final. The last occurrence was when Serena Williams faced Jennifer Capriati. This historic match-up adds an extra layer of excitement to the tournament.

Anisimova Eyes Victory in Canadian Open

Anisimova expressed her joy and surprise at her performance this week. "This is a huge accomplishment for me, and something I've been working really hard towards," she said, according to the WTA's official website. "I'm just super happy, honestly, with my week here, and I'm pretty surprised with how well I've been able to do so far. I'm still hungry for more, and I hope that I can really do well [in the final]."

After taking a break last year to focus on her mental health, Anisimova always intended to return to top-level tennis. "I knew that when I stepped away that I really wanted to come back and I didn't want to finish my career on that note," she stated. "There was still a lot that I wanted to achieve, and just not finish at such a young age because I had sacrificed so much and given so much to the sport."

Jessica Pegula stands between Anisimova and victory. Pegula defeated Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-3 to reach the final. She is now the first player since Simona Halep (2015-2016) and the first American since Jennifer Capriati (2001-2002) to reach consecutive finals at the Canadian Open.

Pegula's Quest for Title Defence

Pegula expressed her excitement about defending her title: "Getting a chance to defend my title is something that doesn't always happen, so I'm excited that I get to put myself in a good spot to do so," she said. "I think it's cool to have my name with a lot of other big names in history that have either played well here or been able to defend the title as well, so it's super special."

Since the WTA 1000 format was introduced in 2009, only Serena Williams (18) and Venus Williams (six) have reached more finals than Pegula (four) among American players. This achievement highlights Pegula's consistency and skill at this level of competition.

The upcoming final promises an exciting clash between two determined American players aiming for glory at one of tennis's prestigious events.
