Ankita in round two of ITF women's Championships

Pune, Nov 10, (UNI) Wildcard Ankita Bhambri outpointed Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand in an exciting encounter, while Kyra Shroff went down fighting to Leonie Mekel of Netherlands in the 25,000 dollars ITF women's tennis Championships here today.

In the first round singles, the 384th ranked Bhambri, recovering from a sore throat, came back from being 1-4 down in the second set to score a 6-3, 6-4 win over the 447th ranked Wongteanchai.

India's promising youngster and silver medallist at the Commonwealth Youth games, Kyra Shroff went down fighting to the 460th ranked Dutch player Leonie Mekel 6-7(7-3), 6-2, 6-3 in a two-hour tussle.

Another wildcard entrant Uzbek Junior Alexandra Kolesnichenko scored a 7-6(7-1), 6-2 win over qualifier Hae-Sung Kim of Korea, while second seeded Korean Ye Ra Lee ranked 192 routed Ellora Dabija of Romania 6-3, 6-3 to move into the second round.

Dabija partnering Bojana Jovanovski created the biggest upset when they knocked out top seeds Agnes Szatmari of Romania and Nicole Thyssen of Nedelands 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the doubles.

Doubles: Elora Dabija/Bojana Jovanovski bt Agnes Szatmari/ Nicole Thyssen 6-2, 6-3.
