Aus Open: Sharapova cruises to 6-0, 6-0 win in 1st round

Melbourne, Jan 14: Last year's runner-up Maria Sharapova won against fellow-Russian Olga Puchkova in a one-sided first-round match on the centre court at the Australian Open. Sharapova, who is suffering from a sore right collarbone, showed no signs of trouble while cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Sharapova, ranked two in the world, who lost the final to Victoria Azarenka last year before going on to win the French Openm faced only two break points in the entire match and saved both of them in the very first game. She then won 12-games on the trot against her 25-year-old opponent, ranked 107, to earn the second 'double bagel' inside one year.

Sharapova, winner of four Grand Slam singles titles, started her campiagn at the French Open last year also with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Romania's Alexandra Caduntu.

Sharapova, however, isn't much concerned about the scoreline. She said even if the scorelines red 7-6, it meant victory.

The Russian had withdrawn from the Brisbane International earlier this month because of the injured collarbone and said she wanted to stay fit for the season's first major. Last year also, she had skipped the tournament prior to the Australian Open and reached the finals of the major.

Sharapova could face Venus Williams in the third round. The American defeated Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan 6-1, 6-0 in her opening match.
