Australian Open: Coco Gauff makes light work of Sofia Kenin at Melbourne Park

By Patric Ridge In Melbourne

Coco Gauff dispatched Sofia Kenin 6-3 6-3 to seal her progress at the Australian Open. American Gauff made light work of her compatriot at Rod Laver Arena on Monday, sealing the win in 81 minutes.

Kenin, who beat Gauff en route to becoming the champion at Melbourne Park in 2020, gifted the world number three the win when she sent what should have been a simple forehand shot long down the line.

Gauff was simply too good for Kenin throughout, though, hitting 28 winners to her opponent's 14 and 12 aces to three.

The 20-year-old, who led the United States to United Cup glory earlier in January, has now won 19 of her last 21 Tour-level matches, since losing in the fourth round at the US Open. She will face Britain's Jodie Burrage, who downed Leolia Jeanjean 6-2 6-4, in round two.

Since the start of 2024, Gauff is 49-3 at WTA-Tour level after winning the first set – only five of those matches have gone to a decider.

She has now won 15 matches against former grand slam champions since the start of the 2023 season.

This victory brought up Gauff's 14th match win at the Australian Open. In the 21st century, only Maria Sharapova (25) and Kim Clijsters (19) recorded more wins at the tournament before turning 21.
