Melbourne, Jan 31: The Serbian world number three player Novak Djokovic defeated Britain's Andy Murray to win the Australian Open and his second Grand Slam title on Sunday, Jan 30.

The final match, which was the first major final without Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer for three years, lasted for two hours 39 minutes where Djokovic thrashed Murray, winning three sets for 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. It was Djokovic's second successive Grand Slam final after losing to Nadal in 2010 US Open.

With this loss, Andy Murray, who was bidding to become the first British man to win a Grand Slam since Fred Perry in 1936, lost all 3 of his Grand Slam finals in straight sets. Djokovic dominated the final match with his powerful game and made this tournament most memorable by losing only a single set in the whole tournament.

"It's been a fantastic tournament for me and I just take it that way. Certainly, this will give me a lot of motivation and confidence for the rest of this season because to win a Grand Slam at the start of the season is the best start you can ask for" Djokovic said after the match.

"You always have to try and find a way to get back in. I thought Novak played unbelievably well tonight. So when I got ahead in some games and even just in the points, he was sticking up lobs that were landing on the baseline, passing shots that were very close to the lines," said Murray.
