Australian Open: Gauff cruises into fourth round in straight sets

By Will Rook

Coco Gauff cruised into the fourth round of the Australian Open after a straight-sets victory over Leylah Fernandez on Friday.

The 20-year-old was a semi-finalist at Melbourne Park in 2024 and, following her 6-4 6-1 win, is looking ominous going into the next round.

Gauff was relatively untroubled throughout the contest, which went with service until the American converted the second of back-to-back break points at 3-3 in the first set.

From that point, the set remained on serve, though the third seed did have a chance to wrap things up with a break at 5-3, but Fernandez held out for a stay of execution.

However, Fernandez's struggles on serve returned in the second set, with Gauff taking full advantage.

The former US Open champion began with a break and soon cruised into a 3-0 lead, though the Canadian did offer some resistance by breaking to make it 3-1, thanks to her opponent's first two double-faults of the match.

But Gauff was back to her big-hitting best in the next game, converting her second break point to make victory look a formality, and she eventually wrapped it up after 76 minutes to set up a fourth-round clash with Belinda Bencic.

Data debrief: Gauff looking ominously effective

Yet to drop a set, Gauff is the first player since Iga Swiatek (2020-2022) to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open women's singles in three consecutive years before turning 21.

She is also the fifth female player in the Open Era to win each of their first eight seasonal matches for three straight years, after Margaret Court, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Serena Williams.
