Bhupathi-Sania; Paes-Shaughnessy make it to QF of US Open
New York, Sept 2 (UNI) Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza barely managed to scrape past Tatiana Golovin of France and Bob Bryan of America to reached the quarter-finals of the US Open.
The unseeded Indian duo took the game 7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-2 to clinch the tie breaker and the match against the American-French duo.
Bhupathi and Sania took the first set with much difficulty but squandered the oppurtunity to go one up against the French-US pair.
The unseded pair of Golovin and Bryan then struck back in the second set, taking the game 6-3. The third set went into the tie breaker where the Indian duo came out victorious.
The victory has become more special for the Sania-Bhupathi pair as both them lost out their earlier singles and doubles matches respectively.
Sania lost her singles match against against her old nemesis Anna Chakvetadze of Russia 6-2, 6-3 in the third round of the 19,653,000 dollar event.
While, Bhupathi along with Nenad Zimonjic crashed out of the US Open doubles draw, loosing the match to unseeded American duo of Robert Kendrick and Sam Querrey 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.
Meanwhile, in the other mixed doubles contest Leander Paes and his American partner Meghann Shaughnessy thrashed fifth seeded Czech duo of Kveta Peschke and Martin Damm in straight sets.
The unseeded Indo-US duo clinched the match 7-5, 6-3 to enter the last eight in the flushing meadows.
