Bhupathi-Sania win Australian mixed doubles

Melbourne, Feb 1: Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi won the mixed doubles title of the Australian Open on Sunday, Jan 31 at Melbourne. They defeated Andy Ram of Israel and Natalite Dechy of France in the finals.

The Indian duo defeated Dechy and Ram in straight set of 6-3, 6-1. The win is India"s second title at this year"s Australian Open. Earlier on Saturday, Yuki Bhambri created history becoming the first Indian to win the Australian Open boys singles title.

Bhambri defeated Alexandros-Ferdinandos Georgoudas of Germany in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Earlier, Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi overcame a sluggish start to sail into the Australian Open mixed doubles finals for second consecutive year as they beat Czechs Iveta Benesova and Lukas Dlouhy in straight sets on Friday, Jan 30.

Thus, Sania Mirza has become first Indian woman to win a senior grand slam tournament. Mahesh Bhupathi has made his seventh mixed doubles Grand Slam titles under his belt with different partners, whereas in toto, he won his 11th grand slam title.
