Alcaraz awaiting test results before making Madrid Open decision

By Oliver King

Carlos Alcaraz said he is awaiting medical test results to decide whether he will be fit enough to participate in the upcoming Madrid Open.

Alcaraz, who is the second seed at the tournament, needed treatment on his right leg during his defeat to Holger Rune in the Barcelona Open final last weekend.

The Spaniard is due to kickstart his campaign against either Zizou Bergs or Yoshihito Nishioka in Madrid.

Alcaraz has already won the Madrid Open twice, doing so in 2022 and 2023, and will be looking to become only the fourth player to win the competition three times.

"I feel fine physically," the 21-year-old said. "I've had tests, and we'll see what the results say. I'm used to playing with discomfort, so let's hope I can play and enjoy Madrid."

Alcaraz is on the same side of the draw as three-time winner Novak Djokovic, who is ranked as the fourth seed in the Spanish capital.

Alexander Zverev, who overcame Alcaraz for the number two ranking after winning in Munich last week, is the top seed. Defending champion Andrey Rublev is the seventh seed.
