Carlos Alcaraz cruises into Rotterdam Open quarter-finals

By Patric Ridge

Rotterdam Open favourite Carlos Alcaraz progressed with ease to the quarter-finals by dispatching Andrea Vavassori in straight sets. The top seed got the job done with little fuss on Thursday (February 6), completing a 6-2 6-1 victory in just 63 minutes.

Alcaraz, who is in the hunt for his first indoor trophy, turned on the style to make light work of his Italian opponent. The Spaniard set the tone by breaking Vavassori in the first game, though he did have to fend off a break point to go 3-1 up in the opening set.

Another break saw Alcaraz take the set at the first time of asking, and he did not look back from there, powering through the second with three straight breaks, including in the last game, which the world number three won when Vavassori went wrong.

That was after Alcaraz had teed up match point with a slick backhand winner. Alcaraz will face either Holger Rune or compatriot Pedro Martinez in the last eight. Earlier on Thursday, there were wins for Alex de Minaur, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Data Debrief: Alcaraz on point

It was a dominant show of force from Alcaraz, who said his performance was "much better" than the level he showed in his opening, three-set win over Botic van de Zandschulp.

Alcaraz won 85% (22/26) of his first-serve points, while converting five of his eight break opportunities.

The 21-year-old is now into a 42nd Tour-level quarter-final, though just his fourth indoors.
