Coco Gauff Stuns World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to Win Maiden French Open Title

By MyKhel Staff

Coco Gauff produced a sensational comeback to clinch the 2025 French Open title, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a gripping three-set finale at Roland Garros on Saturday.

The 21-year-old American rallied from a set down to post a 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 win in just under three hours on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

This victory marks Gauff's second Grand Slam title-her first coming at the 2023 US Open, where she also triumphed over Sabalenka. The young star's latest conquest also serves as redemption for her heart-wrenching 2022 French Open final loss to Iga Swiatek.

Despite dropping the tightly contested opening set in a tiebreak, Gauff displayed maturity beyond her years, taking control of the match as Sabalenka faltered under pressure. Battling blustery conditions, the Belarusian's game unraveled as she committed a staggering 70 unforced errors. In contrast, Gauff stayed composed and consistent, weathering the storm both literally and figuratively.

Sabalenka, who was hoping to collect her third different Grand Slam title and add to her US Open and Australian Open trophies, couldn't maintain her aggressive game as errors piled up. The match echoed the script from their previous major clash at Flushing Meadows-Gauff absorbing pressure, making crucial returns, and capitalizing on Sabalenka's miscues.

With this victory, Gauff now holds a 6-5 edge in her career meetings with Sabalenka and has firmly reestablished herself as a dominant force on clay. The match was also a historic moment for the sport, being the first women's Grand Slam final between the top two ranked players since the 2018 Australian Open showdown between Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki.

From tears in 2022 to triumph in 2025, Coco Gauff's journey at Roland Garros has come full circle-cementing her place among tennis's elite and proving once again that she thrives under the biggest lights.
