Daniil Medvedev makes light work of Pierre-Hugues Herbert in Marseille

By Patric Ridge

Daniil Medvedev returned to form in style as he claimed a comprehensive straight-sets win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert at the Open 13. A champion four years ago in Marseille, Medvedev triumphed 6-2 6-4 in just 69 minutes on Thursday (February 13).

Medvedev claimed the first set in under half an hour, cruising ahead with a double break. And though world number 192 Herbert offered some resistance in the second, he was no match for Medvedev, who got back to winning ways following his shock defeat to Mattia Bellucci in Rotterdam and his disappointing showing at the Australian Open.

"I'm happy I kept my level, I didn't lose my serve and happy with the win," said Medvedev. "I lost very early in Australia. If you play well in Australia your body gets tired, so you want to take it a bit slower. But when you lose, I only played two matches, I thought I might as well play many matches. I'm happy to be back."

Data Debrief: Medvedev makes his mark

Making his first appearance at an ATP 250 event since June 2023, Medvedev let his serve do the work in Marseille, winning 90% of his first serve points.

He offered just one break opportunity to Herbert, breaking the Frenchman three times in return.

The top seed has won 18 of his 20 singles titles on hard courts and is looking sharp in the south of France.
