Medvedev storms into Halle quarters with comfortable Atmane win

Daniil Medvedev rounded off a strong day for the seeded players at the Halle Open after he reached the quarter-finals with victory over Terence Atmane on Wednesday (June 17).

Medvedev, who lost last year's final to Alexander Bublik, edged closer to a shot at redemption in Germany by beating his French opponent 6-4 6-4 in one hour and 25 minutes.

Medvedev storms into Halle quarters with comfortable Atmane win

The fourth seed in Germany set the foundations for his triumph in the opening game of the match, breaking Atmane and was able to hold from there on to take the early lead.

Medvedev maintained control throughout, and despite missing two break points in the third game of the second set, he broke in the ninth game before sealing the win on serve.

His reward is a clash with wildcard and home favourite Daniel Altmaier following his three-set win against Hubert Hurkacz, but there are still some top players left in the draw.

Felix Auger-Aliassime also booked his spot in the last eight, though the second seed was forced to come from behind to defeat American Learner Tien.

The Canadian emerged a 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 7-6 (7-5) victor in a two-and-a-half-hour epic, and he will face Tien's compatriot Frances Tiafoe for a place in the semi-finals.

Ben Shelton also progressed from his rescheduled clash with Lorenzo Sonego, with the recently crowned Stuttgart Open champion due to face Nick Kyrgios.

However, Kyrgios pulled out after sustaining a minor knee injury in Stuttgart, but Shelton still got the job done and won 7-5 6-3 against the Italian.

At the Queen's, meanwhile, beaten 2023 finalist Alex De Minaur wasted little time in booking his spot in the quarter-finals on Andy Murray Arena.

Having beaten Gabriel Diallo in his opening match, the top seed downed another Canadian opponent in Denis Shapovalov with an impressive 6-4 6-1 victory.

Shelton's grass-court success continues

After claiming his third title of the season in Stuttgart last week, Shelton's preparations for Wimbledon continued to go from strength to strength with another fine display here.

He improved to 5-0 on the surface this year, while also winning 89% (33/37) of his first-serve points, with compatriot Ethan Quinn up next in the last 16.

And after title wins in Dallas and Munich this year, Shelton is bidding to become the first player to win crowns on hard, clay and grass in ATP 500 series history (since 2009).
