Davis Cup 2026: India Miss Final 8 After South Korea Defeat

India's Davis Cup campaign came to an end after a 3-1 defeat to South Korea in the second-round Qualifiers tie in Seoul on Saturday.

Having gone 2-0 down after Dhakshineswar Suresh and Sumit Nagal lost their opening singles rubbers on Friday, India needed to win all three matches on the second day to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1996.

India kept the tie alive in the doubles. N Sriram Balaji and Dhakshineswar Suresh were paired together after Suresh replaced Niki Poonacha, and the duo beat Nam Ji-sung and Park Ui-sung 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The Indians made the breakthrough in the fourth game of the opening set but immediately surrendered their advantage. They recovered with another break in the sixth game before serving out the set.

South Korea responded in the second, breaking in the sixth game to force a decider. The third set stayed on serve until Balaji and Suresh found the decisive break in the eighth game before closing out the match.

Nagal defeat ends India's comeback hopes

Any hopes of a comeback disappeared in the first reverse singles, with South Korea's Kwon Soon-woo defeating Nagal 6-1, 6-2.

Nagal, ranked No. 247, held serve in the opening game but was broken in each of the next three as Kwon, the world No. 157, quickly took control.

The second set was more competitive, but Kwon again found two crucial breaks to seal the match and give South Korea an unassailable 3-1 lead.

The result sends South Korea into the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna in November, marking the country's first appearance at that stage of the competition.

India, meanwhile, will compete in the first round of the 2027 Davis Cup Qualifiers.

India have finished as Davis Cup runners-up three times, in 1966, 1974 and 1987, but remain without a Final 8 appearance under the current format.
