US Open: Djokovic Moves Forward As Djere Exits With Injury

Novak Djokovic progresses to the US Open's third round after Laslo Djere retires due to injury. This victory marks Djokovic's 90th win at the US Open, surpassing Roger Federer's record and placing him just behind Jimmy Connors.

Novak Djokovic admitted to serving poorly after advancing to the third round of the US Open. Djokovic faced a tough challenge from fellow Serbian Laslo Djere in Wednesday's main event at Flushing Meadows. Despite needing two hours to secure the first two sets, Djere retired due to injury, giving Djokovic a 6-4 6-4 2-0 win.

"It was a big fight, more than two hours for two sets," Djokovic said. "I served awful and without the serve, you have to grind, you have to run." This victory marked Djokovic's 90th match win at the US Open, surpassing Roger Federer's record of 89 wins. Only Jimmy Connors, with 98 wins, remains ahead of him.

Djokovic Wins as Djere Retires

With this win, Djokovic became the only player in the Open Era to achieve over 90 men's singles match wins at all four Grand Slam events. His career record against Djere improved to 3-0. Additionally, his overall record against fellow Serbians is now 30-5, with just one loss in 19 hard-court matches against them.

Djokovic expressed his excitement about playing on such a prestigious stage. "It doesn't get bigger than this in terms of a tennis stage," he said. He will face Australia's Alexei Popyrin in the next round. "The atmosphere is incredible and it's a great privilege to be able to play here again at my age."

OptaAce highlighted Djokovic's achievement on social media: "Surpassing Roger Federer (89) for the second-most Men's Singles match wins at the US Open, Novak Djokovic has now become the only player in the Open Era to record 90+ Men's Singles match wins at all four Grand Slam events."

Djokovic's dominance extends beyond just this tournament. His overall performance against Serbian players is impressive, with only five losses out of 35 matches. Notably, his sole defeat on hard courts came against Janko Tipsarevic at the ATP Finals in 2011.

This latest victory underscores Djokovic's enduring prowess and ability to overcome challenges even when not performing at his best. As he continues his journey in this year's US Open, fans eagerly anticipate his upcoming matches.

The reigning champion's resilience and skill were evident as he navigated through a difficult match despite serving issues. His ability to adapt and persevere highlights why he remains one of tennis's top competitors.

As Djokovic prepares for his next opponent, his focus will undoubtedly be on improving his serve and maintaining his competitive edge. The upcoming rounds promise more thrilling tennis as he aims for another Grand Slam title.
