US Open Upset: Djokovic's Surprising Loss To Popyrin Marks Early Exit

Novak Djokovic, the defending US Open champion, suffered an unexpected loss to Alexei Popyrin, marking his earliest tournament exit in 18 years. Despite coming off a gold medal win at the Paris Olympics and being a favourite for the title, Djokovic's performance fell short.

Novak Djokovic, the defending US Open champion, experienced a surprising defeat at Flushing Meadows, losing to Alexei Popyrin in four sets. Djokovic entered the tournament with high hopes after his gold medal win at the Paris Olympics and was favoured to secure his 25th grand slam title. However, his aspirations for a fifth New York triumph were thwarted as he exited in the third round alongside fellow favourite Carlos Alcaraz.

Popyrin clinched victory in three hours and 18 minutes, with scores of 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, and 6-4. This marked Djokovic's earliest exit from the US Open in 18 years. Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic stated, "I have played some of the worst tennis I have ever played." He added that despite trying his best and having no physical issues, he felt out of energy from the start of the tournament.

Djokovic's Shock US Open Exit

Djokovic's performance was far from his usual standard. He served a career-high 14 double faults in a grand slam match and made 49 unforced errors. This year will also be notable as it marks the first time since 2017 that he will end without winning a grand slam title.

The day belonged to Popyrin, who saved 12 out of the 16 break points he faced against Djokovic. His forehand proved particularly effective, accounting for 31 of his 49 winners. This victory highlighted Popyrin's resilience and skill on the court.

Despite his early exit, Djokovic remains optimistic about future challenges. He mentioned that life goes on and he plans to recalibrate and look forward to upcoming opportunities. "From the first match, I just didn’t find myself on this court," he said. "Life moves on. I'll try to recalibrate and look forward to what's next."

Always a champion in New York

In conclusion, while Djokovic's unexpected departure from the US Open was disappointing for many fans, it underscored the unpredictable nature of sports. Popyrin's impressive performance serves as a reminder that new talents continue to emerge and challenge established champions.
