Djokovic Opts Out Of Cincinnati Open To Focus On US Open After Olympic Victory

Novak Djokovic will not defend his Cincinnati Open title, choosing instead to prepare for the US Open after winning Olympic gold against Carlos Alcaraz.

Novak Djokovic, the defending champion of the Cincinnati Open, will not participate in this year's tournament. Following his success at the Paris Olympics, where he won his first gold medal at Roland-Garros against Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic has decided to withdraw from the US Open tune-up event in the United States.

With his victory over Alcaraz in Paris, Djokovic became only the second player after Andre Agassi in the Open Era to win all four Grand Slams, an Olympic gold medal, and the ATP Tour Final. Additionally, at 37 years and 74 days old, he became the oldest player to secure a gold medal in either men's or women's singles since tennis was reinstated as an Olympic sport in 1988.

Djokovic Skips Cincinnati Open

Djokovic's decision to skip Cincinnati is influenced by his focus on preparing for the upcoming US Open. He won this competition last year against Daniil Medvedev, securing his 24th Grand Slam title. "We certainly understand that it is a quick turnaround from his Olympic triumph to come to Cincinnati," said Tournament Director Bob Moran in a news release.

"His title run here last year was so memorable. We are eager to see him on court again soon," added Moran. The ATP Tour also expressed their eagerness for Djokovic's return with a tweet: "We can't wait to see you back on court soon Novak." pic.twitter.com/RQx1LgllKE

Last year in Cincinnati, Djokovic triumphed over Alcaraz in three sets, marking his second victory over the Spaniard in their fourth encounter. His recent win at the Olympics improved his record against Alcaraz to 5-4, having lost to him in the Wimbledon final just a month prior.

As a result of Djokovic's withdrawal from Cincinnati, Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard will now enter the draw. This change offers Perricard an unexpected opportunity to compete at a higher level.

The Serbian's choice reflects his strategic planning for maintaining peak performance at major tournaments. Fans and organisers alike look forward to seeing him back on court soon.
