Boos After Match Point: Sumit Nagal Addresses Maia Open Controversy

India's top-ranked men's singles tennis player Sumit Nagal has apologised to spectators in Maia, Portugal, after making a talking gesture towards the crowd following his hard-fought first-round victory over home favourite Henrique Rocha at the Maia Open.

Nagal came through a tense three-set contest, winning 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(5) on Monday. However, his reaction after sealing the deciding-set tie-break drew boos from the Portuguese spectators, prompting the Indian to acknowledge that his gesture was inappropriate.

In an Instagram story, Nagal apologised to the crowd and Rocha, describing his reaction as a heat-of-the-moment response.

"To the crowd in Maia, I want to apologise for the talking gesture I made after the match. It was a heat-of-the-moment reaction, and it wasn't the right way to respond," Nagal wrote.

"I respect everyone who came out to watch, and I appreciate you being there. I've also spoken to Henrique and apologised to him personally," he added.

What Happened Between Sumit Nagal and the Portuguese Crowd?

The incident occurred after Nagal edged Rocha in a closely contested match at the Maia Open. Rocha, the tournament's second seed and Portugal's No. 3 player, was unable to convert his opportunities in the deciding set, according to Portuguese tennis publication Raquetc.

Nagal's victory was sealed in a tie-break, but his gesture towards the spectators triggered a negative reaction from the home crowd. The Indian subsequently addressed the incident publicly, accepting that his response was not appropriate.

His apology also extended to Rocha, underlining his intention to address the episode directly rather than allow the post-match confrontation to overshadow the result.

## Sumit Nagal Looks to Build Momentum After Injury-Disrupted Season

The win in Maia represents an important result for Nagal after a difficult 2026 season affected by injuries to his hip and wrist. The setbacks disrupted his consistency during the first half of the year, making a sustained run of results harder to achieve.

The Indian showed signs of a revival in June when he won the ATP Challenger 75 title in Târgu Mureș, Romania. Nagal defeated France's Felix Balshaw 6-3, 7-5 in the final to claim his seventh career Challenger title and his first since June 2024.

He also reached the semi-finals of a Challenger tournament in the Czech Republic in August, providing further evidence of progress after his injury problems.

His victory over Rocha adds another positive result to that run, although the match will also be remembered for the post-match incident and the apology that followed.

Nagal's Asian Games Campaign Ends in Quarter-Finals

Nagal was also India's last remaining contender for a tennis medal at the 2026 Asian Games. However, his campaign ended in the men's singles quarter-finals, where he lost 4-6, 4-6 to China's Yibing Wu.

India consequently finished the Games without a tennis medal, ending a run of podium finishes that had continued since 1990.

As Nagal continues his return from an injury-disrupted season, his Maia Open victory offers an opportunity to build momentum on court. His apology has also brought clarity to the incident, with the Indian acknowledging his reaction and expressing respect for the spectators and his opponent.
