Diego Forlan, the former Manchester United striker and Uruguay legend, is set to embark on a new chapter in his athletic career by participating in a professional tennis tournament.
At 45 years old, Forlan, who hung up his football boots in 2019, is preparing to compete in the Uruguay Open in Montevideo next month. This event, part of the ATP Challenger Tour, marks a significant step for Forlan as he will play in an ATP doubles event, a tier below the main ATP Tour.

Forlan, once a budding tennis player in his youth, has not strayed far from competitive sports since retiring from professional football. He has kept his passion for tennis alive by competing in ITF Masters events, specifically in the 45 and over category.
His decision to enter the Uruguay Open, however, elevates his tennis pursuits to a new level, as this tournament is a recognized ATP event. To participate, Forlan received a wildcard entry.
In this notable tournament, Forlan will team up with Argentine tennis player Federico Coria, who currently ranks 101st in the world in singles. Coria, having achieved a career-high ranking of 49 in 2023, is expected to make a strong mark.
During his illustrious football career, Forlan left a significant mark, not least during his time at Manchester United, where he made 98 appearances after joining the club in 2002. His journey continued in Spain with Villarreal, where he achieved remarkable success, including winning the European Golden Boot twice. Forlan's football prowess was further recognized at the 2010 World Cup, where he won the Golden Ball as Uruguay secured a third-place finish in South Africa. Additionally, his contributions were vital in Uruguay's triumphant campaign in the Copa America in 2011.
