French Open 2024: Sumit Nagal Would have to Play 'Tennis of His Life' Against Karen Khachanov, Reckons Somdev Devvarman

As India's No. 1 tennis player and currently ranked 95th in the world, Sumit Nagal is set to face a significant challenge in the opening round of the French Open 2024 against World No. 18 Karen Khachanov.

The matchup is expected to be a formidable test for Nagal, and former Indian tennis star Somdev Devvarman has shared his insights on the upcoming clash.

"I think at this point, he's 26 years old, been around for long enough, been now in the top hundred. Had a few wins, had a few runs, done well at the Masters, you know, played against top ten guys. I think he should be feeling about as good as he has," said Devvarman during a media interaction organised by Sony Sports, the official broadcaster of the French Open in India.

Devvarman's confidence in Nagal stems from his recent form and experience on the professional circuit. Nagal, who has shown flashes of brilliance in his career, is entering what many consider the prime of his career.

"He's in the prime of his career. Physically playing the game as good as it's ever been. Let's be honest, it's a huge challenge. Karen Khachanov is one of the toughest matches out there, and a two-time quarterfinalist at other majors as well. And, over the last four or five years, he's always been one of those very consistent performers," Devvarman added. T

his acknowledgment of Khachanov's prowess underscores the magnitude of the challenge Nagal faces. Khachanov's playing style, which involves taking the ball early and dictating play from the baseline, is known to be particularly challenging.

"He loves taking the ball early, loves dictating play from the baseline. It's a really tough match. But I'd like to see a fight. I think Sumit has it in him," said Devvarman.

Despite the daunting task, Devvarman believes that Nagal has a chance, albeit a slim one, to pull off an upset.

"He's got a tough draw in Khachanov, but it's not an unwinnable match. If he finds a way to beat somebody like a Khachanov, then he's got a qualifier or Marcus Giron. Again, that's a winnable match. You know, whoever it is, he'll go into that. So is it possible for him, for us to see it, this tournament? Yeah, it is. But he'd have to play the tennis of his life," Devvarman concluded.
