French Open 2026 Aryna Sabalenka vs Naomi Osaka Prediction: Can Former World No. 1 Pull Off French Open Upset?

For the first time at the 2026 French Open, a women's singles match has been handed the coveted night-session slot on Court Philippe-Chatrier. And it is difficult to argue with the choice.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will take on four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in what is arguably the biggest match of the tournament so far. It brings together two of the most powerful players in women's tennis and marks only their fourth career meeting.

French Open

Sabalenka currently leads the head-to-head record 2-1. After losing to Osaka at the 2018 US Open, the Belarusian has won both of their meetings this season, including a hard-fought three-set victory on clay in Madrid.

Naomi Osaka showing signs of a clay-court breakthrough

Clay has never been Osaka's strongest surface, but the Japanese star has looked increasingly comfortable on the dirt this spring.

She entered Roland Garros with a 7-2 clay-court record in 2026, with her only defeats coming against Sabalenka in Madrid and four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek in Rome.

Osaka has dropped just one set through her opening three matches in Paris and arrives in the fourth round after an impressive straight-sets win over American teenager Iva Jovic.

The former world No. 1 also appears physically sharp and is striking the ball with the kind of confidence that made her a four-time major champion.

Why Aryna Sabalenka remains the favourite

Despite Osaka's resurgence, Sabalenka remains the clear favourite for several reasons.

The Belarusian has been the most dominant player on the WTA Tour this season, compiling a 27-3 match record and winning 57 of her 66 sets. She has already claimed multiple titles in 2026 and has established herself as the woman to beat in Paris.

Perhaps more importantly, Sabalenka has developed a reputation for thriving in the latter stages of Grand Slams. She has won each of her last 13 fourth-round matches at major tournaments and has shown a level of consistency that few players can match.

Her recent victory over Osaka in Madrid could also prove significant. After losing a tight opening-set tiebreak, Sabalenka adjusted brilliantly and took control of the contest, winning the final two sets comfortably.

French Open Prediction: Sabalenka in three sets

Osaka has enough firepower to trouble anyone when her first serve is firing and her aggressive baseline game is clicking. On current form, she is capable of taking a set and pushing the contest deep into the evening.

However, Sabalenka's superior clay-court pedigree, recent head-to-head success and remarkable consistency at Grand Slam events make her the safer pick.

Expect Osaka to produce moments of brilliance and keep the crowd engaged, but over three sets Sabalenka's physicality, movement and ability to absorb pressure should prove decisive.

Prediction: Aryna Sabalenka def. Naomi Osaka in three sets.
